RAMZY REVIEWS: "The Purge: Election Year"

It's been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn...or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.

You know what? I actually enjoyed this one! Yeah, I mean, the movie on an objective standpoint is pretty bad, still, but it certainly has the entertainment factor going on for it much like the second one!
I didn't quite enjoy the first installment though as I just hated some of the characters in that enough to literally make me walk out of it. For "The Purge: Election Year", there was a whole lot of clunky dialogue, but the characters--or at least enough of them I felt, were likeable. And the look we got at the resistance was cool. I hope this isn't the last one. I hate to see franchises get stale with too many entries, but if they just keep up the trend of making it more ridiculous, I can actually see myself going to watch it again just for the sake of having some mindless fun!

There were a few gems in this movie that you only get to see a handful of times, which sucks. I feel like they presented some good ideas but never really bothered expanded on them. For example, the whole foreigners coming into the country to purge. They only had that single sequence for the entire movie and nothing more. Another problem would be that, there's never really that much tension surrounding the characters, because you never really felt like they were in any real danger.

These cunts are the absolute worst part of the movie for me, just...ugh....
Lastly, I thought it was a bad-to-mediocre movie with a lot of fun! And sometimes that's enough if you're in that place of needing that type of movie. A lot of problems with the writing, direction, acting, and overall cohesiveness of the whole thing, but the action and stuff that happened all throughout the film was just enough for me to actually find myself enjoying it quite a bit.

The director and writers really need to learn the definition of "subtle", though. As this movie just beats you over the head with it's messages to the point it pretty much ruined it. But again, it was still enjoyable enough. Haha. Overall, I liked it more than "The Purge" but less than "Anarchy".

Personal rating: 5.2/10
