RAMZY REVIEWS: "INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE"

As the Fourth of July nears, satellite engineer David Levinson investigates a 3,000-mile-wide mother ship that's approaching Earth. Fortunately, 20 years earlier, nations across the world started to use recovered extraterrestrial technology to develop an immense defense program. When the alien invaders attack with unprecedented force, the U.S. president, teams of scientists and brave fighter pilots spring into action to save the planet from a seemingly invincible enemy.

Okay, I'll get out of the way immediately. This is nowhere near as good as the first one. It's emotionally stale and flat. I never found myself empathizing with any of the characters. Most of the movie, I pretty was pretty much indifferent about nearly all of them and the movie didn't really try making me feel different either. The writing just felt like it was trying too hard to throw movie-poster quote quality lines one after the other--almost kind of trying to rival its predecessor's iconic President's speech scene during multiple moments, but never really achieved that. Instead, the majority of the dialog just fell flat. The performances, were not bad. But again, with the caliber of writing in the movie, I'd imagine there would be nothing ground-breaking for the actors to work with neither.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" is yet another tragic tale of the Hollywood machine trying to make bank on ideas of the past and doing almost nothing to make them actually good. The blatant setup for another sequel right at the end was just...face-palm inducing, really. At the end of the day, this is just another soulless cash-grab....although...a decently entertaining one at that. It was entertaining. I'd be fooling myself and my readers if I said otherwise. I didn't hate it. The CGI and the action was actually kinda fun. However, something just felt wrong about the entire thing. If I were to put it into a food-based analogy, this movie would be a cake. The most high-budget, lavish, grandiose cake there was, topped with the most impressive decorations and pieces, but when you take a slice and have a bite...you will find that the actual cake underneath is just a dry, bland, piece of cake. But you continue eating it because the frosting and bits and pieces of sweet decorations on top of it give it enough of a quality boost to justify being consumed.

This is a penultimate example of a "popcorn-flick" movie. It's good for everyone, absolutely nothing new or groundbreaking, but still quite enjoyable.

Personal rating: 6/10
