RAMZY REVIEWS: "John Wick: Chapter 2"

Legendary hitman John Wick is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins' guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome, where he squares off against some of the world's deadliest killers.

As a follow-up to the now cult-classic movie that came out in 2014, "John Wick: Chapter 2" certainly has a lot to prove, specially taking into mind the possibility of the "sequel curse" plaguing this movie and have it fall into the pit where countless amounts of other Hollywood sequels, that just never managed to live up to expectations lie. Well, right out the gate, I am very glad to inform you that "John Wick: Chapter 2" lives up and steps it up to a whole 'nother level with guns blazing. Like, I mean literally...there's so much gunfire in this movie.

One of the first things I would like to pinpoint is just how fantastic this movie was shot. From composition, to how slick everything looked, the pulsing neon-lit sequences that were the closest thing to "eye-gasm" I've seen in a cinema since "Doctor Strange". Goddammit was this movie a beauty to look at in a whole lot of ways. I mean... look...

While there's really nothing groundbreaking going on with the film's writing, it does happen to be quite decent, which is always a huge plus for an action movie to have. The world and a lot of its characters are wonderfully fleshed out and just leaves you intrigued and kind of wanting more out of the universe where to be honest....is everyone in there a fucking hitman? Because--this isn't really a spoiler--there are some scenes where everyone who's in receives a message on their phone alerting that it's now open season for Mr. Wick. And during those sequences, everyone he's walking past gets the message, like...how much of the world's population are hitmen at that point?! I really love how everyone just knows about the man, John Wick, or the Baba Yaga, The Boogeyman, as the people in the know like to call him. They just know not to fuck with the guy. Which is already a recurring theme in the first movie, brought again for this one and is just continued to be played off and challenged well. As for the performances, they're pretty alright, not really gonna get Oscar-worthy acting in here, but they do get the job done. It gets kinda goofy sometimes though, and I totally mean that in the best way, whether that's because of the script or Keanu's performance, I did quite like it. The music happens to be pretty good as well. Some good scoring that just adds so much to the adrenaline inducing sequences that at times, you may find yourself bobbing your head to the music and stomping your feet along as it's playing.

And last, but absolutely not the least, the action scenes. This movie's pièce de résistance. The very thing that makes this such a good movie because of how the movie is just bursting at the seams with them and how astounding and utterly entertaining they are! It even begins with a crazy sequence that would be a lesser film's climax, and then just ramps it up to 11 and breaks the knob after that. There's also that ridiculously hilarious scene where John and a fellow hitman are in a public place trying to kill each other from far away but don't want to cause chaos amongst crowd so they try to shoot at each other as discretely as they can while walking at a normal pace and just kinda hiding their guns close to them while trying to fire it. How something so simple and understated was something I've never seen in another movie in my life and actually ended up being my favorite scene in the entire film! There are quite a number of hand-to-hand combat action, but where it really shines are in its slick, tactical, and fantastically choreographed gun-play. Now there are a few tropes that occur, but they are easily dismissible because of how good it just flows and how they all hit the right spot as if having the perfect meal that's so delicious and filling after feeling hungry...only in this case, there's a lot of gunshots, punching, neck-breaking, martial arts, more gunshots, stabbing, and even more gunshots.

This was such a fantastic action movie, definitely one of the greatest action movies I've ever seen, and such a perfect sequel because it takes what made its predecessor good, and just builds upon it and takes it to a whole 'nother level. A definite recommendation for me, whether you're a fan of action movies or not because it is just that entertaining, just make sure you're not too young or don't have the stomach for violence.

 Personal rating: 9/10

  4. I've probably seen 1/4 of this movie when my husband watched it at home. Not sure if I can take the violent scenes. Although I've watched quite a lot of action movies, I'd usually skip the super morbid part.

  6. I always have this thing for revenge films, especially the violent ones with full-on gore. And John Wick 2. DOES. NOT. DISAPPOINT. The sequel primarily succeeds because it does what any decent action sequel should be doing - double the amount of non-stop action thrills without compromising the plot. It's an edge-of-your-seat action film that'll have your heart racing up until the very last second.

  14. I am still no fan of these kinds of movies. I'd really rather go for cheesy romantic comedies kay it's a way for me to relax. Hahaha. But recommending this to the partner! :)
